My Hiring Playbook Was Broken — Here are 5 Traits I Now Prioritize Above All Else

Pillars Discussed

In this article, I share how a hiring decision crystallized a lesson I've learned over 15 years: in the AI era, the old hiring playbook is broken. I chose a candidate with modest technical skills but extraordinary ability to communicate over one with impressive AI certifications — and she transformed our most resistant department head into our biggest technology champion.

AI has collapsed the shelf life of technical skills. What remains irreplaceable is distinctly human: understanding the people technology serves, translating technical possibilities into business realities, and building trust with stakeholders who fear obsolescence.

I outline five soft skills that matter most — empathetic communication, context awareness, relationship-building as risk reduction, adaptive problem-solving, and bridge-building across divides. I've redesigned our interviews to focus on human challenges over code challenges, asking candidates about times they implemented something people didn't want rather than quizzing them on technical stacks.

The takeaway: everyone has access to the same AI tools now. The real differentiator is how your team thinks, connects, and brings others along. That's the human edge — and in 2025, it's more valuable than ever.
